Who We Are
Unique and fresh, Mirch is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Mirch Masala is Northwestern University’s newest Indian-fusion dance team, and we Mirch girls really take our title to heart. We blend different styles of dance, bringing together seasoned Bharat Natyam dancers , zesty hip-hop moves, and spicy art forms from all around India and the world. Mix all that with a fiery group of performers to create a flavor that is uniquely Mirchi. Get a taste of culture, passion, and creativity with Mirch Masala.
History
Founded by Saloni Behl in her freshman year, 2003, Mirch Masala started off as an all-female fusion dance group that performed at on-campus events and fundraisers, as well as school-wide competitions and local shows, making a name for itself within the Northwestern and Chicago communities.
Mirch became a competitive team only recently, by popular demand, in the spring of 2008. Since then, Saloni’s vision has brought together ten amazing girls and ten versatile dancers, fusing styles of dance and music we all had only dreamed of. In the one year that we have competed together, we applied to three competitions, were accepted into all three, placed second at two of them - and noted a crowd favorite at the third.
As a first year team, Mirch’s recognition and awe for its unique sense of fusion, has reached far and wide, beyond the midwest. We’re psyched to be back for another year, so get pumped! Can you handle the heat?!
