Taal, Columbia University’s South Asian fusion dance troupe, will be hosting the ninth annual Naach Nation on Saturday, February 26, 2011. Naach Nation is an intercollegiate dance showcase, the goal of which is to promote South Asian arts while donating to a charitable cause.

Founded in 2001, Naach Nation began as a means to promote South Asian dance in both the collegiate and artistic communities. Towards this goal, Naach Nation was founded as a non-competitive showcase to allow dance troupes to share their interpretations of dance with each other and a larger audience. Naach Nation 9 will continue in that tradition to create a sense of community amongst the many South Asian fusion dance teams across the nation.

The line-up:
NYU Nasha
UConn Surya
Brown Badmaash
UMass SASA Dhadak
SBU Thillana
Columbia TAAL

Venue:
115 St. & Broadway
Roone Arledge Auditorium @ Columbia University

Tickets can be bought at: http://www.cuarts.com/calendar/view/typ ... nt_id/9529

NYU Nasha: I love you guys. So so sharp, great music choice, synchronization was superb. Absolutely my favorite team of the night.

UConn Surya: Good choreo, good music, but increase your overall energy, it was a bit low. I sadly don't remember much of the performance, possibly due to the previous fact.

Brown Badmaash: :D

UMass SASA Dhadak: Saw these guys at raunak too. Dream theme about being in the jungle. Different animals represented different dances, I think cheetah/leopard was bhangra, etc. Hiphop was great, bhangra too, improve your salsa and itll shine, but biggest of all: your music transitions were not great and they made me sad. Literally depressed in the audience. It's a simple thing to work on, and smooth music transitions allow you to make even smoother/cooler dancing transitions. Also, that kid Andyfred is boss.

SBU Thillana: Missed a lot of this performance each time, went right after my team.

Columbia TAAL: Friendship theme dance, looked good for many sections, but a certain hiphop section people forgot a lot of moves. All in all, solid performance.

Chai Town A Capella: Could only hear them from back stage, we were on deck when they were performing. They were really good, they performed Amplifier, Choli Ke Peeche, Sajda+Tere Naina, and one other thats avoiding my memory right now. Cool guys too.

P.S. Guys, please stop using Slumdog millionaire songs, three performances used them. It's not just me, the entire balcony was resonating that thought. Slumdog came out 3 yrs ago, it was overused, and there are so so so so many indian songs out there. If you're looking for a techno-y rahman classical song (like liquid dance or chitti showcase), do some research on his newest stuff (or new classical stuff in general). You'll find something cool that no one would have thought of.

2000 and late but better late than never:

SBU Thillana's routine this year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5LDffG8gaA

We are certainly guilty of using a Slumdog song, ahaha.
Feel free to comment and critique!
Overall, this showcase ran very smoothly - no complaints! The girls on Taal are extremely sweet. All the teams were friendly and it was such a pleasure to share the stage with such amazing talent. Our team still couldn't figure out how UMASS brought a mattress to the stage.. :D
